Guatemalan Culture

We went on a walking tour of the city yesterday.  Here is a list of life happenings in Quetzaltenango...

  • Each meal ends with a person standing up to say "muchas gracias" and all at the table saying "buen provecho".  My accent is getting better with so many practices!
  • Our family goes to bed between 8:30 and 9:00pm and wakes between 4:30 and 5:00am.  I never thought I could get so much done in a morning!
  • No toilet paper in the toilet...always in the waste basket beside.
  • The smell of exhaust on the streets and the sounds of honking horns.
  • Dial up internet
  • Everyone eating every meal together at the table, even if we watch TV most of the time.
  • Low water pressure in the shower...I am just happy it's warm!
  • Being flabbergasted that something costs Q40 and realizing that translates to about $5.
  • Being able to pick out foreigners by their show choice.
  • Spanish everywhere.
  • Beautiful traditional clothing...full of colors and strips!

The local market by the bus station.

Some buildings near the central square I live by.

The main government building.
